Cheesy corn dip (adapted from Notions & Notations of a Novice Cook)

three cans of corn, drained

about a cup of sour cream

1 green bell pepper, 1 red bell pepper, diced

half a red onion, diced

s&p

cayenne

about a cup or two shredded pepper jack cheese

1 jalapeno, seeded and diced

2 Tbsp. butter

- preheat oven to 375.

- melt 1 Tbsp. butter over medium heat and sauté corn until golden, set aside. Rummage through your friend's bachelor pad kitchen for a sharp knife. Give up and use the dull knife.

- sauté onion, bell pepper, and jalapeno until translucent. Add corn, sour cream, a good amount of cheese, s&p/cayenne to taste. Try not to make disparaging remarks over the unrefrigerated marinara sauce. Fail horribly.

- transfer to oven-safe vessel, top with remaining cheese and bake until gooey. Serve with garlic-rubbed toasted baguette slices.

- Eat all the delicious things while you "watch" the Super Bowl. Translation: eat all the delicious things while you ask annoying questions about the game of football (What IS a blitz? Is it like a blintz?), play with all the adorable children, and watch someone have an allergic reaction and refuse to make a big deal about turning beet red while his throat closes up.

- Spend a few hours in a Centreville dive bar, watch all the local drunkards, and accidentally make googly eyes a few times.

sounds like: the lemonade mix cd that Stephanie made me two years ago. It contains all kinds of wonderful songs by The Ink Spots, Nat King Cole, Pomplamoose, Doris Day, and Django.

tastes like: roasted eggplant with balsamic vinegar over raw kale, green tea, and fresh ginger/apple/carrot juice.

feels like: It should not have been 70 degrees on the first day of February. Reading Sartre's No Exit with a warm winter breeze through my open window which should be mildly depressing but is oddly pleasant. The music and breeze makes up for the "I'm stuck in hell's waiting room with two people I hate" existentialism.

smells like: vanilla perfume, fresh laundry, and the promise of cold weather in the air.

1. How ever many sheets you have, double them. You'll need it.
2. clothes pins. The Essential blanket fort tool.
3. Create a good foundation. Your blanket fort is only as strong as its foundation.
4. thin rope or string. You may need to lift certain parts due to not having any point of support, so tie an end of the string to a bit of cloth and tie the other end somewhere high, a well secured ceiling lamp maybe?
5. GO BIG OR GO HOME. it's a fort not a dog house.
6. Go crazy. experiment. use your imagination.

1. We used five or six queen size duvet covers. There were three standing by.
2. We used hair ties and rubber bands.
3. Chairs and lamps make for decent foundation.
4. I couldn't find twine (huh. I think it's in my car) so we had telephone cord (which we didn't use).
5. It was pretty big (that's what she said). I mean, there was essentially an entry way, room for four people and a dog, and room for two to sleep (note to self: more cushioning on floor so no achy back the next day).
6. We experimented. They didn't always work. Next one will be bigger and better. When does a fort stop being a fort?

sounds like: Bon Iver. I've been playing the Bon Iver album since July. It's just so good. I can't even describe to you how amazing/relaxed I feel and how productive I am when I listen to this album. Any music that can make me, the one with all the blogs and the procrastination skillz, productive is good music. It's snowing heavily, I've got coq au vin simmering on the stove, and I'm playing Bon Iver? If that doesn't say winter then I don't know what does.

tastes like: peach black tea that I bought in Savannah, iced coffee, hot oatmeal, and (though I haven't had it yet) coq au vin. It's also a good day to bake something. Maybe a tart tatin or some kind of cinnamon coffee cake.

feels like: winter contentment and thick socks.

The wonderful thing about having creative friends and being handy with a camera is that they occasionally ask you to photograph their handiwork. Libby, of Hello It's Libby, recently produced an adorable zine (lady bones, soon to be available here) and asked me to snap a few product shots. Uh, of course! We photographed them in Cherry Hill Park (thanks to Russian Rachel for the location suggestion) on a very cold winter afternoon and two of us were wearing ugly Christmas sweaters. The brown/cream paper and handstitched binding looked so good against tree stumps and sand patterns. Keep an eye out for it, folks.

2011 was an amazing year: I ate shrimp & grits in Charleston and picked peaches in Maryland. We drank alcoholic slushies on the streets of Savannah and went ghost hunting in Harper's Ferry. Four of my good friends got married and I had the honor of being a bridesmaid for one of them. There were epic blanket forts, fog art installation pieces, and Belgian waffle parties. I saw Bon Iver, The Rosebuds, Childish Gambino, sosupersam, Walk The Moon, and Fitz and the Tantrums live. I missed a bus to New York but rode a trolley in Georgia. I photographed the ocean from the top of a lighthouse on Long Beach Island, ate roasted brussel sprouts and banana pudding in Richmond, and baked gingerbread men at an ugly Christmas sweater party.

This year has pretty much been perfect. 2012, you have some big shoes to fill.

(and I totally used Justin's beautiful face as the thumbnail so I would get more hits on the video. No shame).

Happy 2012, y'all! I hope everyone had a great new year's eve! I had dinner with Justin; we drank Moscato and watched the Christmas episodes of Modern Family and New Girl. I had a shot of whiskey in my hand forty seconds after I walked in the door at Pat's. Clyde's = all dem drunk white people. The bar across the street = rowdy older crowd (hey, OGs need to party too!). People watching with Kara (Meekus! Look at that super tall girl! She can be your girlfriend! This bar is crowded, I am inadvertently dancing against a stranger. Oh no, that skeevy guy is hitting on your friends, save them!). Meekus had the bright idea, pun intended, to blind the clusterfuck at the bar with his camera flash so we could get drinks. Remember that time I ran into Danielle, who is essentially my boss, and danced with her all night in the front entrance of Clyde's? That girl parties like it's 1999. The night ended with firetruck fotoshoots (heh), Lindt chocolates, Sugalumps, and sweet sandwiches. It was a good night. It was a good year.
