Act 3

Remember that time that Justin asked for my opinion on the poster for his MFA show and I spent the next forty minutes designing a series of flyers for fun? And that it was two in the morning when I started? It was wonderful to exercise my creative muscles outside of the work realm. I felt the same this past Sunday at Yathrib's Make Your Own Valentines party. More on this later.

If you happen to be in the dirty Bruns in the beginning of March, go see Act 3. While I can't speak for the other artists, I know Justin's work and it will be spectacular. You could also tag along when I go to the second show in New York sometime in April. Art AND spring food adventures!

Ira Glass. Food typography. Relief printing. Perfection.

THE GAP by Ira Glass from frohlocke on Vimeo.

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Lovely short film about Seb Lester, type designer and artist from East Sussex. Watch how he does the M and the W. Gorgeous. I've always been very attracted to the way people flare out their descenders. I know, I know, neither the M or the W has a descender, but still. Descenders and middle names are two things that interest me greatly, probably because I don't have either one.

Dayenu, the fact that I'm getting old, and tenacious tanlines.

Excerpts of the art booklet (brochure? booklet?) that I designed for Margaret. I think I'm getting old, I can't handle late night designing like I used to. Mama needs to sleep. On the upside, I got to stare at lovely earth & water tones for a few hours. That's pleasant. Not as pleasant as actual beach time, but hey, I'll take what I can get.

Speaking of beach time

This photo was taken at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, sometime last May. We arrived around six in the morning, staked our claim on the beach, exclaimed about a dolphin sighting, and found a Starbucks for croissants and coffee. I made a half-hearted attempt at reading before falling asleep on the beach for a few hours. We rented an umbrella and, no matter what he tells you, Justin hogged it because I woke up in blazing heat with the first sunburn I'd had in over ten years. I STILL have the tanline on my back.

Beach time needs to happen soon. Staring at Margaret's textured sintra plates placates for only so long.

GMU Artsbus promo vid: I Love New York

Hey self, you've gone on the Artsbus at least ten times.
You should do a promo for it as your final project for motion design!

Side note, thank you to all the people who have ever let me photograph them on said trips and double thanks to Justin for all of his sound/editing help and for keeping me company until five in the morning.
